Picking a lid for paper cups should be simple, but it rarely is. One type works fine with iced coffee and turns soft with hot drinks. Another looks natural but hides the beverage. A third feels sturdy yet doesn’t match the cup rim. Most of the decision comes down to three materials you’ll see again and again: PLA, CPLA, and Bagasse.

PLA vs CPLA vs Bagasse

Here’s a practical breakdown based on how they actually perform in cafés and takeaway operations.

PLA lids

PLA comes from plant sources such as corn starch. It stays clear, so customers can see the drink inside. That makes it a natural choice for iced coffee, cold brew, smoothies, and juice. The fit is usually clean and familiar.
The drawback shows up with heat. Standard PLA softens when the liquid is too hot, which is why it’s not the first pick for freshly poured coffee or tea.

CPLA lids

CPLA is PLA that has been further processed to raise its heat resistance. It handles hot drinks better than regular PLA and still offers a consistent snap-on fit. Most versions are opaque rather than transparent.
Coffee shops that want a plant-based lid for hot service often land on CPLA because it balances performance and compostability claims.

Bagasse lids

Bagasse is made from sugarcane fiber left after the juice is extracted. These lids have a matte, natural look and a slightly textured surface. They pair especially well with kraft or unbleached paper cups and give a clear “fiber-based” signal to customers.

They manage heat reasonably well. The trade-off is visibility, you won’t see the drink through them.

Matching lid to the drink

Cold drinks and anything you want customers to see → PLA Lid
Hot coffee or tea with a plant-based preference → CPLA Lid
Hot drinks plus a natural fiber appearance → Bagasse Lid

Many businesses end up using more than one type. That’s normal when the menu includes both hot and cold items.

Fit still comes first, Even the right material will leak if the diameter is wrong. The two most common sizes in the market are 80mm and 90mm.

Hydepackage supplies lids in these standard sizes across the three materials:

80mm – typically matches smaller cups (around 8oz range)
90mm – the more common size for 12oz, 16oz and larger paper cups

Always check the actual rim measurement of your cups before ordering in volume. A quick sample test with your existing cups saves a lot of trouble later.

 FAQs by Hydepackage

Q: Is there a big price difference between PLA, CPLA and bagasse lids?

A: Yes, though it varies by order volume. PLA is often the most accessible on cost. CPLA usually sits a bit higher because of the extra processing. Bagasse can land in a similar range to CPLA or slightly above, depending on the supplier and quantity. For most cafés, the difference per lid is small compared with the cost of a wrong fit or a lid that fails with hot drinks.

Q: Can I print my logo on these lids?

A: Full-color printing is far more common on the cup than on the lid. Most PLA, CPLA and bagasse paper lids are supplied plain. Some suppliers offer limited color options or simple branding, but the main brand visibility still comes from the cup itself. If logo placement on the lid is important, ask for what’s actually feasible before assuming it works like cup printing.

Q: Do double wall cups need special lids?

A: No. Double wall cups use the same rim standards as single wall cups in most cases. An 80mm or 90mm lid that fits your single wall cups will generally fit the double wall version of the same size. The extra wall affects insulation, not the lid diameter.

Which Lid to Choose?

Start with the drink temperature. Then decide whether you need transparency or prefer a natural look. Finally, confirm the lid diameter against your cups. Once those three points are clear, the choice between PLA, CPLA, and bagasse usually becomes obvious. If you’re still comparing, request samples and test them with the actual drinks and cups you use every day. Real use is still the fastest way to know what works.
